Neck Pain
What Causes Neck Pain?
The cervical spine is a marvelous structure. It is capable of supporting a head weighing 12 or more pounds while moving in several directions. No other region of the spine has such freedom of movement. This combination however, complexity and mobility, make the neck susceptible to pain and injury. Facet joint injury, disc injury, muscle strain, arthritis and even stress can cause neck pain. In most cases there is inflammation and muscle spasm involved. In addition to bones and discs, your neck includes the upper region of your spinal cord, 8 pairs of nerve roots, an elaborate system of arteries and veins, 32 muscles for strength, and numerous ligaments. The joints, muscles, and ligaments assist with movement and stabilize the neck. Any dysfunction of this complex network can lead to pain.
